A 7-Day Vietnam Itinerary That Does Not Rush
19 August 2026 · TravelJar

The most common mistake on a first Vietnam trip is treating it as one destination. It is roughly 1,650 kilometres from Hanoi in the north to Ho Chi Minh City in the south — closer to travelling from Delhi to Bengaluru than to a short hop between cities.
Seven days covers one stretch of the country well, or three stretches badly. This is how we structure it on our group departures, and why.
Pick north or central, not both ends
The north gives you Hanoi's Old Quarter, the limestone karsts of Ha Long Bay or the quieter Ninh Binh, and day trips into hill country. The centre gives you Da Nang's coastline, Hoi An's lantern-lit old town, and Ba Na Hills with the Golden Bridge. The south is Ho Chi Minh City's pace and the Mekong Delta.
On a seven-day trip, picking two of those three regions means one internal flight and a workable pace. Picking all three means you spend two of your seven days in transit.
- North + centre is the most popular combination for a first trip
- Internal flights between Hanoi and Da Nang take a little over an hour
- Overnight trains exist and are cheaper, but cost you a night of sleep
Where the days actually go
A workable shape is three nights in the north, three in the centre, and one buffer. Hanoi needs a day on foot — the Old Quarter, the lake, the train street in the evening. Ha Long or Ninh Binh takes a full day, and an overnight cruise is worth it if the budget allows.
In the centre, Hoi An deserves an unhurried day, ideally ending after dark when the lanterns are lit. Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge is a half-day at minimum once you account for the cable car queue.
What most people underestimate
Weather varies enormously by region and season — the north and centre do not share a climate, and a month that is dry in one can be wet in the other. Check the forecast for each region separately rather than for the country.
Ba Na Hills in particular sits high enough that it is frequently in cloud. Photographs of the Golden Bridge in clear sun are the exception, not the rule. Go anyway; just adjust expectations.
Common questions
Do Indian passport holders need a visa for Vietnam?
Yes. Vietnam operates an e-visa system for Indian passport holders, applied for online before travel. On our group departures we guide travellers through the application as part of the booking.
Is seven days enough for Vietnam?
For one or two regions, yes. For the full length of the country, no — you would spend too much of it moving. Most first-time travellers from India do the north and centre, and return later for the south.
