The Golden Bridge at Ba Na Hills: What It's Actually Like — TravelJar Travel Blog

The Golden Bridge — the walkway held up by two enormous weathered stone hands — sits in the Ba Na Hills above Da Nang, and it has become the single most recognisable image of Vietnam.

It is worth going. It is also worth knowing what the visit involves, because the photographs leave a lot out.

Getting up there

Ba Na Hills is reached by cable car from near Da Nang, and the ride itself is a genuine part of the experience — it climbs a long way over forest. Queues for the cable car can be substantial, particularly in the middle of the day.

The site at the top is a full resort complex, not just the bridge. There is a French-village-styled area, gardens, and a good deal else to walk through, so budget more time than the bridge alone would suggest.

The weather is the variable

The hills sit high enough to be in cloud a great deal of the time. Arriving to find the hands emerging from thick fog is common — some travellers find it more atmospheric than a clear day, but if you are picturing blue sky, be prepared.

Ponchos are widely sold on site, and the walkway gets slippery when wet. Sensible footwear matters more than it sounds like it should.

Common questions
