Hoi An is the stop that most reliably breaks Vietnam itineraries, because people arrive for a night and start looking for ways to stay longer.

The old town is a preserved trading port, compact enough to cross on foot and closed to most traffic for parts of the day.

It is at its best after dark

The silk lanterns that define the town's image only work in the evening, when the streets and the river are lit and boats carry paper lamps downstream. An afternoon visit misses the point entirely.

Plan at least one full evening, and ideally arrive the day before rather than passing through.

Tailoring, food and the beach

Hoi An is known for tailoring, and turnaround can be quick — but quality varies enormously between shops and a rushed order rarely fits well. If it matters to you, allow more than a day and expect a fitting.

The town also has a distinctive local food culture, and An Bang beach is a short ride away, which is what turns a one-night stop into three.
