Abu Dhabi sits close enough to Dubai to make a comfortable day trip, and it has a noticeably different character — quieter, more spread out, less relentlessly commercial.

Most travellers who make the trip do it for one building.

The Grand Mosque

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the reason most people go, and it justifies the drive. It is genuinely vast, and the white marble and inlay work reward slow looking.

The dress code is enforced and specific: everyone covers shoulders and knees, and women cover their hair. Abayas are available on site but the queue for them is a poor use of the day if you can dress appropriately in advance.

What else fills the day

Louvre Abu Dhabi is architecturally striking in its own right and worth time even if the collection is not your main interest. The Corniche and the Emirates Palace area round out a relaxed day.

Yas Island's theme parks are a separate proposition and really need their own day rather than being squeezed alongside the mosque.
