Pangong Tso: Is the Drive Worth It?
3 August 2026 · TravelJar
Pangong Tso is the image that sells Ladakh — a long, high-altitude lake that shifts through blues and greens as the light changes.
It is also a long way from Leh, over a very high pass, and the journey is the part people underestimate.
The drive is the hard part
The route crosses Chang La, one of the highest motorable passes anywhere, and the altitude gain is significant. This is not a day-one trip — it belongs after you have acclimatised properly in Leh.
Roads are mountain roads, and timings depend on conditions. Allow considerably more time than the distance suggests.
- Acclimatise in Leh first — never go on arrival day
- Inner line permits are required and are arranged in advance
- Do not linger at the top of the pass; descend to the lake
Day trip or overnight
Doing it as a day trip means most of the day in a vehicle for a couple of hours at the lake. It works, and plenty of people do it, but it is a long day.
Staying overnight lets you see the lake at both ends of the day, which is when it is at its best. Accommodation is basic camps and guesthouses, and nights are cold at that altitude — expect simple rather than comfortable.
