The Manali–Leh Road: What the Drive Is Actually Like
31 July 2026 · TravelJar
The Manali–Leh highway is one of the great drives, and it is also the sensible way to arrive in Ladakh if you have the days.
Gaining altitude gradually over two days does more for your acclimatisation than any amount of resting after a flight.
The route
The road crosses several very high passes and long, empty high-altitude plains. It is typically broken with an overnight stop partway, in basic accommodation — this is not a stretch with comfortable hotels.
Conditions vary from good tarmac to rough and broken sections, and weather can change the picture quickly. Timings are estimates rather than schedules.
- Two days with an overnight stop is the standard shape
- Accommodation en route is basic — tents and simple guesthouses
- Fuel and phone signal are both scarce for long stretches
Season decides everything
The highway is open for only part of the year and is closed by snow for the rest. Opening and closing dates shift annually with conditions, and early or late in the season the road can close at short notice.
If your trip depends on this route, build flexibility in, and have a plan for flying instead if it does not open in time.
