Goa Beyond the Beaches

Goa Beyond the Beaches — TravelJar Travel Blog

Goa's beaches are the reason most people come, and they occupy roughly a tenth of the state's area.

The inland half is where the Portuguese history and the landscape are, and it is almost entirely skipped.

The built heritage

Old Goa's churches are the remains of what was once a major colonial capital, and the Basilica of Bom Jesus is a UNESCO-listed site of real significance. It is a half-day and it is close to both coasts.

Panjim's Fontainhas quarter — narrow lanes, tiled house numbers, painted facades — is the most atmospheric walk in the state, and best done early before the heat.

Inland and upriver

Dudhsagar Falls is at its most dramatic during and just after the monsoon, and access is controlled — it is not a place you simply drive to.

The inland villages and the backwaters around Chorao and Divar give a version of Goa that looks nothing like the beach strip, and they are twenty minutes away from it.
